Building your mental muscle for better resilience

It is world mental health awareness month and I always look forward to this time of year because it serves as a reminder to check in with ourselves and evaluate where we are on our mental health journey. We often shy away from mental health because its not something we are used to talking about, and when it is spoken about the stigma and shame that comes with mental health difficult make it hard for us to speak up freely. So we all hide behind that ‘I am ok” vail in hopes that the difficulties we face disappear and we don't have to face up to them.

The thing about mental health though is that we should not be asking the question if I will be impacted by rather when. As we transverse life we will face the ups and downs that life throws at us and all this affects our mental health. The extent to which this happens is different for everyone.

It’s not all doom and gloom because the answer to this is simple. By looking after our mental health we begin to build our mental muscle. This allows us to build resilience and strength so that we are able to face those difficult times and not be overwhelmed by them. It helps us to process what we are going through, acknowledge our emotions and find a path through so we come out on the other side.

Being mentally well does not mean you wouldn't be affected by the difficulties of life but rather that you will be able to acknowledge them and seek out help should you need it.

Small, consistent steps taken more frequently is the key. The results wouldn't be immediate but over time you will be able to look back on your journey and evaluate what works for you, what doesn't work, how you can better look after your mental health and what are the things that affect your mental health negatively.

You might be thinking to yourself where would I even start. Well that where I come in. I’ve unpack this a bit more in this blog post and even noted a few suggestions. Have a read and share your thoughts. If you had to start today to take care of your mental health doing one simple thing, what would that be? If you still need suggestions you can sign up for

5 Days of Mindfulness. This is program that takes you through the practice of mindfulness over 5 days. It’s simple, quick and free.

So I’ll leave you with this thought today. When thinking about your mental health think simple and consistent and you will be well on your way to building your mental muscle.

Wellness wishes,
